The history of Kelburn Castle
# 1. The origins of the castle
- Kelburn Castle was originally built in the 12th century and is one of the oldest continuously inhabited castles in Scotland.
- It has been the ancestral home of the Boyle family for over 800 years, whose members have close connections to Scottish and British history.
- The castle has been renovated and expanded multiple times, but its medieval origins are still visible in the original stone structure.

# 2. Extensions and architectural changes
- In the 17th and 18th centuries, Kelburn Castle was further developed to increase living comfort.
- Elements of Scottish Baronial style were added, including towers, bay windows, and decorative facades.
- The estate grew into a magnificent Scottish country estate that harmoniously blends with the surrounding landscape.

# 3. The modern Kelburn Castle - An artistic experiment
- In 2007, Kelburn Castle underwent a radical transformation: a group of Brazilian graffiti artists were invited to create colorful, surrealist artworks on the exterior facade of the castle.
- This project, known as the "Kelburn Graffiti Project," was originally planned as a temporary art installation but was kept permanently due to its popularity.
- The graffiti design makes Kelburn Castle a unique blend of historical and contemporary art not found in any other Scottish castle.

The unique architecture and the Graffiti Project
Kelburn Castle is one of the few historic castles that have integrated modern art in such a bold way.

# 1. The classical architecture
- The castle combines elements of medieval, Baronial, and Victorian architecture, with distinctive stone towers, steep roofs, and romantic windows.
- The interiors are rich in historical furniture, artworks, and family heirlooms reflecting the estate's centuries-old history.

# 2. The Kelburn Graffiti Project
- The graffiti artists, including Os Gêmeos, Nina Pandolfo, and Nunca, created a colorful, imaginative facade design featuring mythical creatures, faces, and patterns.
- The mix of classical architecture and urban art creates an unusual but fascinating contrast.
- Kelburn Castle has become a symbol of innovation and creative freedom within a historical context.

We had an official tour around the estate castle. It was fantastic. The history of the castle was related by a super knowledgeable guide. The tour lasted about an hour and we were treated to mince pies and mulled wine served in the grand dining room. I can highly recommend

Surrounded with a forest of mixed varieties of trees, plants 🪴 and also a waterfall where it's said at dusk by the side of the waterfall you just maybe catch a glimpse of what only can be best described as a wee fairy 🧚‍♀️ 🤔🤫😉 Just saying...

Love this place has a great environment and facilities but if you want to enjoy the whole experience you have to be able to go upstairs as it's quite difficult for some people.

Blight was an improvement on last year’s Halloween event- probably somewhere between 3 and 4 out of 5. Seemed like more thought had gone into it and it was far less crude. Main let down was the final scene which was bland and fell flat. Next year’s event could be improved by more fire, pyrotechnics and a proper finale.

Went with my 13 year old to visit their spooky event "Blight". This was an absolutely amazing experiences. Very tense throughout, actors were incredible, kept us involved all the way through. I really hope this gets bigger and better each year. Can't find a fault with it.

A family favourite! The river glen, the secret garden, the adventure course all add up to a wonderful day out. The café is very nice also. The annual music festival on the grounds is also one of Scotland's best. Also super family friendly! Highly recommended!
